Reader Policy

Data & Ethics

We want useful local information and useful analytics without turning individual readers into surveillance products. This page separates what PDX Live Events does today from what we intend to build carefully in the future.

PDX Live Events is an independent Portland publication and event directory. This page explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to you. If you have questions, email [email protected].

What We Collect

Information you provide directly

  • Newsletter subscribers: email address, and whether you opted in to weekly updates.
  • Event submissions: event name, date, venue, ticket price, links, description, contact email, and optional images.
  • Performer registrations: stage name, act type, genre, contact email, phone number, bio, social links.
  • Venue & organizer registrations: business name, organizer type, contact email, phone number, website, capacity notes.
  • Volunteer interest: name, email, area of interest, and an optional message.

Information collected automatically

When you visit the site, standard web analytics data is collected, including pages visited, referring URL, browser type, device type, approximate location (country/city), and session duration. This is aggregated and anonymized by default. We do not fingerprint individual visitors or track you across other websites.

Analytics

Current behavior: We use consent-based Google Analytics 4 to understand site traffic, including pages visited, referrals, device type, approximate location, and session duration. Analytics storage is denied until a visitor accepts analytics cookies.

Future intention: We want to offer artists, venues, and organizations useful aggregated information about discovery patterns. Any future product must be designed with restraint around individual tracking.

How We Use Information

  • Publishing approved event listings on the public calendar.
  • Sending the weekly newsletter to subscribers who opted in.
  • Contacting submitters if we have a question about a listing.
  • Building an internal performer and venue directory for future booking features.
  • Following up with volunteers about available opportunities.
  • Understanding how the site is used so we can improve it.
  • Running targeted promotions for local shows to help artists and venues reach their audience (using analytics data only - we do not share personal contact details for advertising).

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate the site. Each has its own privacy policy:

Our database provider. All form submissions are stored in Supabase-hosted PostgreSQL databases on infrastructure in the United States. supabase.com/privacy

Cloudflare Pages & Turnstile

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Form submissions go through Cloudflare Pages Functions, which provides bot protection via Turnstile (a privacy-preserving CAPTCHA alternative that does not use tracking cookies). cloudflare.com/privacypolicy

Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

We use GA4 to understand site traffic. Analytics storage is granted only after you accept cookies. We have configured GA4 with ad storage and personalization denied by default. policies.google.com/privacy

Resend

Transactional and newsletter emails are sent via Resend. Your email address is shared with Resend only to deliver emails you requested. resend.com/privacy

Cookies & Consent

We use a minimal set of cookies:

  • Strictly necessary: The cookie consent preference itself (set by CookieConsent, stores your choice locally).
  • Analytics (optional): Google Analytics cookies (, ) - only set if you accept analytics cookies.

You can change your cookie preferences at any time using the "Cookie Preferences" link in the footer.

What We Do Not Want to Become

Our direction is a privacy-conscious local information service, not a business built around following individual readers across the web. The current commitments below describe how we handle personal information.

  • Sell your contact information to data brokers or third parties.
  • Display your email address, phone number, or private contact details publicly.
  • Use your submission data for any purpose unrelated to operating this directory.
  • Send you marketing emails without your explicit opt-in.

Your Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights including:

  • Access: Request a copy of personal data we hold about you.
  • Deletion: Request that we delete your data. We will do so within 30 days except where we are required to retain it.
  • Correction: Request that inaccurate data be corrected.
  • Unsubscribe: Every newsletter email includes an unsubscribe link. You can also email us at [email protected] to be removed.
  • California residents (CCPA): You have the right to know what personal information is collected, to opt out of its sale (we do not sell personal information), and to non-discrimination for exercising these rights.

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected].

Data Retention

We retain submission data for as long as it is useful for operating the directory. Newsletter subscriber records are retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion. If the site is shut down, all personal data will be deleted within 90 days of closure.

Children's Privacy

This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information, contact us and we will delete it.

Event and Submission Information

By submitting an event, performer profile, or venue profile, you agree that:

  • The information you submit is accurate to the best of your knowledge.
  • You have the right to submit the content and images you provide.
  • Your event or profile complies with applicable laws and does not promote illegal activity, harassment, or discrimination.

We review all submissions and reserve the right to reject or remove listings that do not meet these standards, without notice. We are not liable for errors in submitted information or for changes to events after listing.

PDX Live Events is a free, community-run directory. We do not guarantee that listings will reach any particular audience or generate any particular outcome.

Data for Artists, Venues, and Organizations

We may use aggregated, anonymized analytics data to run paid promotions for Portland events across social media platforms. This helps local artists and venues reach audiences actively looking for shows. We do not share individual contact details with advertising platforms for targeting purposes - only aggregated behavioral signals (page views, interest categories).

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the site evolves. Material changes will be reflected in a new effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance.
